Catherine and I had decided a bit before this weekend that we could use a little quiet family get-away. I said how about Mt. Rainier, and she found a nice little cabin for us to spend a night it. Before we left, though, I wanted to get some photos of the kids.
I brought out the lights, got my background all set, and fired away a couple of photos. These were about the best of the bunch.
Then we loaded up the car and made our way to Mt. Rainier. Due to all of the rain and wind, the road has been closed to the Paradise area (avalanche danger on the road) pretty much this whole week, and this weekend was no different. We went to Longmire instead, where despite not a lot of snow, we still had a nice walk.
Ian and Leah in particular had a great time making snowballs and throwing them at the "snow elves", which in regular terms means every tree next to the trail.
We had to wait until 4pm to get the cabin, so that meant a fair bit of exploring at Longmire and at a couple of stops on the way back down the mountain. Eventually we made our way to the cabin, and first things first - started a fire. Catherine made a simple (but delicious) meal for dinner, and then we all played Monopoly. Leah crushed us all!
Another storm rolled in later that night. Where we were, it was mostly rain. Hard rain, to be sure. It switched to snow later in the morning, giving us about an inch or two at the cabin. We left a bit early to go back up to Longmire (there was no way with all that wind and rain/snow at elevation that the road was going to open) and were the first ones out to enjoy 10 new inches of fresh snow! It was a great little walk, and unlike the day before, the snowshoes were both necessary and beneficial.
We stopped at this little waterfall on our way out just so I could snap a photo.
That was our President's Day. Ian and I have Cub Scouts later tonight, so now we're all just relaxing in the comfort of our own home. Have a great day everybody!
Cheers,
Marc
